Glenburn, PA Company Reimburses EPA $1 Million for Superfund Cleanup
In February 2009, it was announced that a Glenburn, PA company had paid the EPA almost $1 million as a settlement for the cleanup of a site the EPA had designated as a Pennsylvania Superfund site.
The site was contaminated with the toxic chemical hexavalent chromium, which had leached into both the soil and water. Exposure to hexavalent chromium can cause serious health risks such as respiratory disorders and lung cancer.
Tests at the site have revealed that the cleanup efforts have been successful in terms of lowering the amount of the chemical in the soil and leaching into the Ackerly Creek in Lackawanna County. The contamination of the property is thought to stem back to the 1950s, when the site was used as a plant where locomotive crank shafts were plated with chromium.
