Former switchman: "We weren't aware of the dangers of asbestos."
In recent news, a former switchman has brought a lawsuit against a railway company, charging that he contracted mesothelioma after being exposed to asbestos fibers during the time he worked for the company.
According to court documents, the man began his occupation as a switchman for the railway in 1958 and remained in that job through 1990.
He has told the court that while working as a switchman, he worked in close proximity to multiple products that contained asbestos, including: including pipe and block insulation, gaskets, packing, cements, brake shoes and brake linings.
The switchman also claims that during the entire time he worked on the railway, his employer did not inform him of the grave dangers of inhaling asbestos dust and fibers.
He reportedly contracted mesothelioma as a result of this negligence.
The switchman has charged that his railway employer failed to provide him with any information on how to work with asbestos safely. This would have entailed giving instructions on how to operate the locomotive repair facility in a safe manner, given that asbestos inhalation was a factor in such work.
