SYMPTOMS OF ASBESTOS
Workers harmed by asbestos exposure sometimes don’t exhibit symptoms for decades
April 5, 2010 – Symptoms of asbestos exposure do not appear for many years after the exposure, making it very difficult for doctors to detect asbestos diseases in their crucial early stages.
The earlier symptoms of asbestos exposure are recognized by a doctor, the greater the chances of a patient’s recovery. There is, however, no cure for mesothelioma, the signature asbestos-related cancer that kills 90,000 people worldwide every year.
Workers in the construction, automotive and maritime industries are most vulnerable to occupational asbestos exposure, which occurs most frequently through inhalation of airborne asbestos fibers during certain work activities.
Dormant symptoms of asbestos exposure
Symptoms of asbestos exposure very often take anywhere between 15 to 40 years before they appear – and before an asbestos-related disease (such as mesothelioma, asbestosis or lung cancer) can be formally diagnosed.
Symptoms of asbestos exposure include:
- Shortness of breath
- Difficulty breathing
- Persistent cough
- Chest pain
- Weight loss
- Lost appetite
- Difficulty swallowing
- Face or neck swelling
- Nausea
- Fever
Exhibiting one or more of these symptoms of asbestos exposure does not mean you have an asbestos disease, but it would still be advisable to see a doctor for a checkup.
