SYMPTOMS OF MESOTHELIOMA
The most common symptom of asbestos-related mesothelioma is localized chest pain
April 15, 2010 – Symptoms of mesothelioma usually appear decades after occupational asbestos exposure, sometimes up to 40 years later.
There are three types of mesothelioma. The most common type is called pleural mesothelioma, which affects the tissue lining of the lungs. About 75 percent of all mesothelioma cases are of this type.
Pleural mesothelioma is caused by the inhalation of airborne asbestos fibers. When microscopic asbestos fibers become embedded in the lining of the lungs (called the pleura), they can fester for years before developing into the recognizable symptoms of mesothelioma.
Oftentimes, the first onset of symptoms to occur is the presence of excess fluid (known as a “pleural effusion”). Fluid buildup creates pressure and chest pain. Initial treatment requires drainage of this fluid to help reduce chest pain.
Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma
The most common symptom of pleural mesothelioma is localized chest pain, but this may not occur until the disease is well advanced. Other symptoms include: shortness of breath and a persistent cough.
A less common but still prevalent symptom of pleural mesothelioma is weight loss; while some patients show virtually no symptoms at all.
Medical authorities agree that the earlier symptoms of mesothelioma are detected, the greater the chances that treatment will be successful.
Most treatments, however, are only designed to improve the quality of life for patients while they battle the disease. That’s because there is no cure for asbestos-related mesothelioma cancer.
