The Use of the Gastrointestinal Drug Reglan Linked to Serious Side Effects, Including Tardive Dyskinesia (TD)

The lawyers in Weitz & Luxenberg’s dangerous drugs unit are researching cases of individuals who were treated for gastrointestinal problems with the drug Reglan who subsequently developed a serious automatic muscle disorder known as tardive dyskinesia (TD).

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with TD after taking Reglan, we may be able to help you. Please complete the form on this page to obtain vital information about your legal rights and options.

Reglan (which is also prescribed in its generic form, Metoclopramide), is a medication that is prescribed to patients who suffer from chronic gastrointestinal problems. The drug is available in three forms: as a tablet, as an IV infusion and as a syrup.

Reglan is prescribed to patients with gastrointestinal problems, and in particular, those who suffer from acid reflux. The drug works by speeding up the time in which food is digested in the stomach and emptied into the intestines.

For diabetic patients, Reglan is given to slow the emptying of the stomach. When the stomach of a diabetic empties too quickly, it can cause heartburn, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting.

Reglan is also given to combat the nausea and vomiting that many cancer patients experience while undergoing a course of chemotherapy.

In the hospital, many doctors prescribe Reglan to patients after surgery as a preventative measure against stomach problems and nausea many individuals experience as a side effect of general anesthetic drugs.

Serious Side Effects Linked to Reglan
While a number of Reglan patients experience feelings of restlessness, feeling sleepy or finding they are unable to sleep, one of the most severe side effects linked to the use of the medication is a condition known as tardive dyskinesia (TD).

TD patients experience abnormal and uncontrolled muscle movements such as

  • Smacking of one’s lips, uncontrolled chewing and/or puckering of the mouth;
  • Frowning and/or scowling;
  • Sticking out one’s tongue; and
  • Blinking and moving of the eyes.

    In many cases TD patients also find themselves with tremors and shaking of their arms and legs.

    Tragically, there is no treatment or cure for TD. While some TD patients experience a lessening of tremors and symptoms after they stop taking Reglan, many others face symptoms for many years.
