Question 1: Were you exposed to Teflon?
In order for us to file a successful Teflon claim on your behalf, you must have been exposed to Teflon. Teflon has several industrial applications, and its manufacture can contaminate groundwater. It is also of concern because of its common use as a non-stick coating on frying pans and other cookware. Non-stick coatings on household frying pans have been shown to release toxic gases upon overheating. These gases are lethal to birds, and can cause flu-like symptoms in humans.
Question 2: Did Teflon affect your health?
When a Teflon pan is left unattended on a high-power gas burner in a small unventilated apartment it can cause polyfume fever. In more severe cases, the decomposition chemicals can be lethal. In recent years, under the threat of litigation, DuPont has become more forthcoming about the risks of using Teflon on hot surfaces but has not stopped selling the product. The EPA's scientific advisory board found in 2005 that perfluorooctanoic acid, a chemical compound used to make Teflon, is a "likely carcinogen." This finding was part of a draft report that has yet to be made final. DuPont settled for $300 million in 2004 a lawsuit filed by residents near its manufacturing plant in Ohio and West Virginia based on groundwater pollution from this chemical.
Question 3: Was your injury serious?
Companies that produce hazardous materials are required by law to market, contain, and dispose of industrial pollutants in a way that won't harm a community's health. If a company is using or storing Teflon materials improperly, the company may be negligent, and individuals may be able to sue them for health damages and the costs of cleanup.
