Teflon chemical on EPA hit list

Jamuary 26, 2006 (chicagotribune.com)

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency plans to list a toxic chemical used to make Teflon alongside such well-known persistent pollutants as mercury, lead and PCBs, signaling increasing alarm about its potential effects on human health.
EPA officials also are increasing pressure on companies to stop using the chemical, called perfluorooctanoic acid, by asking DuPont and several other corporations to voluntarily eliminate PFOA and similar substances from plant emissions and products by 2015.

August 1st, 2005 (u.redlandsdailyfacts.com)

Recently, a class action suit filed against DuPont in several states, including New York, charged that the company did not warn consumers about the dangers of a chemical in Teflon, including an increased risk of cancer. DuPont denies the allegations and says Teflon-coated cookware and other chemically treated products, including food packaging, rugs and clothing, are safe.

Dupont is facing new charges from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that it concealed research showing that pregnant workers were passing on Teflon chemicals to their unborn children. The EPA has also accused Dupont of failing to report evidence that the chemicals used to manufacture Teflon had contaminated water supplies affecting 12,000 people in the local area. Many of those affected families are suing Dupont.

DuPont loses round in Teflon case

August 2004 (findarticles.com)

DUPONT HAS BEEN DEALT a setback in the controversy surrounding a chemical it uses to manufacture Teflon. The Environmental Protection Agency said in a complaint filed in July that it would take action against the company for failing to disclose the "substantial risk" to human and environmental health posed by the chemical, known as C-8. The complaint cited violations dating back to 1981, when the EPA says DuPont discovered C-8 in blood samples from pregnant women who worked in its Teflon plant in West Virginia.
