Two more children who have lived in The Acreage have been diagnosed with brain tumors in the past few weeks, according to the Palm Beach Post on Dec. 14, 2009. The news comes as state health officials conduct interviews to learn if common patterns exist among 13 other Acreage children who have suffered from brain tumors in recent years, the Post reported.
An eighth-grader reportedly had been dealing with headaches for about a year when the pain became too severe to bear, and her parents rushed her to the emergency room. Until then, neither doctors nor her parents suspected she had a brain tumor. Surgeons operated on the 13-year-old last week.
In another family, a father discovered his 13-year-old having a seizure. Surgeons removed a tumor last week.
Some Acreage residents suspect that environmental pollution has caused the brain tumors in the roughly 45,000-resident community that relies mainly on well water.
Health officials by Jan. 1 expect to finish interviewing the families of 13 children who were younger than 18 when diagnosed with a brain tumor or brain cancer from 1993-2008, the Post reported.
"We have seen this scenario far too often, where families living near and around toxic chemical leaks become concerned for their health and want answers," said Lemuel Srolovic, an environmental attorney in the Toxic Torts unit of Weitz & Luxenberg.
Srolovic and fellow attorneys are currently conducting a preliminary background investigation of the Acreage, which includes those living in and around Loxahatchee, Unincorporated West Palm, Royal Palm Beach and Jupiter.
"We are actively investigating pollution discharged to the area and that pollution's likelihood to be responsible for the residents' illnesses," said Srolovic.
