A recent article featured the story of a surgical nurse who was involved in a terrifying accident involving her new Toyota Camry.
She had no idea that on that morning, she would become one of more than 100 drivers, according to a USA TODAY search of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration complaints database, who over the past few years have had their Toyota vehicles accelerated unexpectedly.
After accelerating to pass a truck, the woman reportedly took her foot off the gas pedal.
Unfortunately, the car barely slowed down when she pressed the brake.
Luckily, she managed to swerve onto the road without hitting anything. But her car filled with smoke and her brakes were smoldering from repeated attempts to slow the Toyota Camry.
According to USA Today, the 100 complaints are just a sliver of the cars affected by Toyota's latest recall.
Background
On January 21, 2010, Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) and the NTSA announced the recall of approximately 2.3.million vehicles due to accelerator pedal defects.
That recall comes on the heels of another one involving Toyota floor mats.
On September 29, 2009, the Associated Press reported that Toyota would recall 3.8 million vehicles in the United States to address problems with a removable floor mat that could interfere with the vehicle's accelerator and cause a crash.
According to the AP, Toyota said it is the largest U.S. recall in its history.
