On January 21, 2010, Toyota issued a recall of 2.3 million vehicles "to correct sticking accelerator pedals."

According to Insideline.com, a journalistic site devoted to information about the automobile industry, in informational materials sent to dealers, Toyota says there is a "possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position."

Over time, the website added, some accelerator pedal mechanisms may become worn. One dealer source told the website that it generally occurs when the vehicle has reached 38,000 miles on the odometer.

Before the recall involving the Toyota gas pedals, the car giant issued a recall of 4.2 million vehicles with potentially dangerous floor mats.
