Toyota pedal defect in cars leads to crashes, massive recall

Did a faulty Toyota pedal lead to a serious injury? Our attorneys are currently investigating possible lawsuits involving the recalled Toyota models.

In recent news, the family members of a California woman who died when her Toyota Camry crashed have filed a lawsuit.

The lawsuit claims her accident occurred when the car spontaneously sped out of control.

They are suing Toyota and demanding the company vastly expand its recall.

Reportedly, the lawsuit claims the crash was caused by a defect in the pedal, part of Toyota's electronic "drive-by-wire" throttle system, which the auto giant has so far ruled out as a cause of incidents of unintended acceleration in its vehicles.

Instead, Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) has insisted such problems are mechanical in nature, rooted in ill-fitting floor mats that can cause the accelerator pedal to jam, or in pedals themselves that stick.

Toyota has recalled some 8 million vehicles worldwide, including 2.3 million in the United States for the repair of sticking gas pedals in its eight top-selling models. Millions more vehicles were recalled for floor mat adjustments.

  • 2007 - 2010 Tundra
  • 2008 - 2010 Highlander
  • 2009 - 2010 Corolla
  • 2009 - 2010 Venza

  • 2006 - 2010 IS 250
  • 2006 - 2010 IS 350
  • 2007 - 2010 ES 350

Toyota is urging that owners of these vehicles take out the floor mats on the driver's side and not replace them.

    Toyota recall: Defective Pedals

In yet another Toyota recall, on January 21, 2010, Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) and the NTSA announced additional recalls of approximately 2.3 million vehicles due to accelerator pedal defects.

The models affected in this recall are:

  • Certain 2009-2010 RAV4
  • Certain 2009-2010 Corolla
  • 2009-2010 Matrix
  • 2005-2010 Avalon
  • Certain 2007-2010 Camry
