Reports of Serious Vehicular Defects Continue to Plague Toyota After Back-to-Back Reports of Prius Hybrids Experiencing Brake Failures

Reports of drivers experiencing serious problems with Toyota vehicles continue to make the news. Two March 2010 reports focused on accidents involving Toyota Prius hybrids where the drivers found themselves unable to stop their accelerating vehicles. Since fall 2009, Toyota has recalled over 8 million cars, trucks and SUVS with accelerator problems.

If you or a loved one was injured in an accident involving a recalled Toyota vehicle, even if you were not driving or a passenger in the Toyota vehicle, please complete the form on this page for information from our lawyers about your legal options.

On March 8, 2010, news media throughout the United States reported on an incident involving a California man behind the wheel of his Toyota Prius who found himself facing a sudden, uncontrollable acceleration problem while traveling on the San Diego freeway. Fortunately, a California Highway Patrol officer provided expert assistance to help the man slow his car, and eventually safety stop his car.

Less than 24 hours later, a woman in the Westchester County, NY town of Harrison found herself behind the wheel of an out of control Prius. In her case, her car began to accelerate from the moment she pushed the ignition. After speeding down a curved driveway her car sped across a busy two-land road and crashed into a stone wall. Accident reports indicate that while the woman only traveled 150-200 feet, she hit the stone wall such force that it caused boulders weighing over 500 lbs. to move over 10-15 feet.

Federal Regulators Begin New Investigation
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NTSA) is now looking into this accident. Since reports from the Harrison police department reflected that the woman’s vehicle had previously been taken to a Toyota dealership for repairs related to the November 2009 recall, this accident was not linked to a defective driver seat floor mat.
