TRANSITE ASBESTOS
Construction workers are vulnerable to asbestos exposure when working with transite asbestos products
Presently, there are no laws in force prohibiting the importation and use of transite asbestos pipe in building construction.
April 26, 2010 - Transite was a type of wallboard and siding made from asbestos and Portland cement. The amount of asbestos it contained varied from 12 percent to as much as 50 percent.
Transite asbestos materials were used primarily for siding, roof shingles, floor and ceiling tiles, furnace flues, chimneys, plumbing systems and any other area requiring protection from excessive heat.
As long as transite is in good condition and has not been disturbed by age, erosion, sanding or drilling, the asbestos in it does not pose a serious risk. When it is physically disturbed or has deteriorated, transite asbestos products become hazardous.
Dangers of transite asbestos
Construction workers conducting renovation or demolition work are vulnerable to airborne asbestos fibers when working with transite asbestos products.
Those most likely to have suffered serious asbestos exposure include workers in factories, where transite asbestos products were made. Handling powdered asbestos fibers and mixing it with Portland cement can lead to a variety of diseases, such as mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
U.S. courts today recognize the liability of certain asbestos companies that mined, manufactured and sold products made with asbestos. Indeed, many companies deliberately hid the dangers of asbestos from their own workers to boost productivity and reduce overhead expenses.
Weitz & Luxenberg has a strong track record in obtaining record-setting verdicts and settlements for asbestos-injured workers.
