Transportation fatalities drop among nation's occupational workers in 2007
October 10, 2008 -- A total of 5,488 fatal work injuries were recorded in the United States in 2007, a decrease of 6 percent from the revised total of 5,840 in 2006, the U.S. Department of Labor said in a new report titled, “2007 Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries.”
Key findings of the report indicate that transportation fatalities among workers, which typically account for two-fifths of all workplace fatalities, fell to a series low of 2,234 cases in 2007.
Nearly all types of transportation fatalities saw sizable year-to-year decreases in 2007, including non-highway incidents (down 15 percent); workers struck by vehicles (down 10 percent); water vehicle incidents (down 28 percent); railway incidents (down 26 percent); and aircraft incidents (down 23 percent). Highway accidents also decreased, but only by 3 percent.
New York City transportation fatalities
In New York City, transportation incidents claimed the lives of 12 workers in 2007, including highway accidents (5); and workers struck by vehicles (6).
