For several years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been investigating instances where women suffered a serious injury or other post-surgical complication after undergoing pelvic surgery that involved repairs to pelvic organs that had prolapsed and surgeries to correct stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
During these surgical procedures, mesh patches known as transvaginal mesh are put in place to provide additional support to damaged pelvic organs. Unfortunately, many women have suffered serious post-surgical complications and injuries caused by the pelvic mesh patches.
Mesh Patch Injuries
The FDA has studied over 1,000 reports submitted by healthcare providers regarding pelvic injuries linked to the transvaginal mesh patch.
Injuries included pelvic organ pain, infections, recurrences of urinary incontinence, vaginal scarring and mesh erosion in vaginal tissue.
In more serious cases, the mesh caused perforation in the bowel, bladder, and blood vessels in the pelvic area.
In addition, many women who have suffered transvagical mesh patch injuries report a loss in their quality of life because of pain, bladder control problems and a loss of enjoyment of life with their partners caused by significant pain during intercourse.
