The Food and Drug Administration has heard from many women who underwent a procedure with transvaginal surgical mesh and experienced serious complications following surgery. Some are currently discussing lawsuit options with our firm.
In one report to the FDA, a 67-year-old underwent a transvaginal repair with synthetic mesh for pelvic organ prolapse.
According to the FDA, four weeks later, this woman began to have troubling health problems: spotting, discomfort, and vaginal irritation.
Her surgeon reportedly discovered that the transvaginal surgical mesh had eroded into her vagina.
Unfortunately, she needed yet more surgery for resection of the exposed mesh and closure of eroded tissue.
In the last 3 years, the FDA has received over 1,000 adverse event reports about mesh used in transvaginal surgical repair of pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence.
These reports include problems such as erosion, extrusion, incontinence and recurrence of prolapse requiring revision surgery.
Some women reported serious injuries such as bowel, bladder, or blood vessel perforation. Most patients described in the adverse event reports needed medical or surgical intervention, and some required hospitalization.
Some companies that manufacture the type of product in question include Bard, which manufactures Avaulta, and Ethicon, which manufactures Gynecare Prolift.
