Crash leaves passenger with brain injury

TAMPA - A man suffered serious brain injuries Sunday when the sports utility vehicle he was riding in slid into a Tampa Electric pole on N Rome Avenue, Tampa police said.
Speed and weather conditions contributed to the accident, police said. The Driver was charged with reckless driving with serious injury. Neither man was wearing a seat belt.

Anyone who suffers a severe brain injury has an increased risk of epilepsy, especially if seizures occur within a few days of the injury. Drugs such as cocaine and Ecstasy also are known to cause seizures. Other causes of epilepsy include brain damage before birth, infections such as meningitis and encephalitis, brain tumor, stroke or bleeding in the brain, or a family history of seizures. However, many people with epilepsy have none of these risk factors.
Neuren brain injury treatment goes forward

Neuren Pharmaceuticals Limited (NEU) announced today that its agreement with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, (“Walter Reed”) based in Washington DC, to develop the Company’s second lead compound, NNZ-2566, as a therapy for traumatic brain injury (“TBI”) has been expanded. Under the current agreement, Walter Reed funds half of the preclinical research relating to NNZ-2566, with Neuren retaining all future commercial rights outside the US military. The company advised that preclinical results from the NNZ-2566 studies showed that the benefit of administration following injury has increased from a 50% reduction in neurological deficit to a 70% reduction with longer drug exposure.
