TVT sling surgery and possible complications from transvaginal mesh patches
Our lawyers are currently speaking with women who had TVT sling surgery and developed serious complications involving erosion of the mesh and other problems. To discuss your situation, please complete the form below.
One of the most common styles of sling surgery is the TVT sling (tension-free vaginal tape sling).
These bladder slings are used in the surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence.
Who is a candidate for TVT slings?
Anyone who has been diagnosed with “stress urinary incontinence” is considered a candidate for the TVT bladder sling.
Stress urinary incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine with coughing, laughing, sneezing or any other types of physical activities.
The TVT sling surgery is done if a woman's urethra tends to fall down with stress urinary incontinence (with coughing, laughing, sneezing, or any type of physical activity).
The bladder sling acts like a hammock underneath the urethra, to provide support underneath the urethra. Therefore, when the urethra tries to fall down, the sling prevents the hypermobility of the urethra, and thereby prevents leakage.
Unfortunately, many women have come forward to say the TVT sling mesh implant has caused serious complications.
Certain complications of transvaginal placement of surgical mesh were detailed in an FDA Public Health Notification dated October 2008.
Read the FDA Public Health Notification: Serious Complications Associated with Transvaginal Placement of Surgical Mesh in Repair of Pelvic Organ Prolapse and Stress Urinary Incontinence
Over the past three years, FDA has received over 1,000 reports from nine surgical mesh manufacturers of complications that were associated with surgical mesh devices used to repair pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
Some companies that manufacture the type of product in question include Bard, which manufactures Avaulta, and Ethicon, which manufactures Gynecare Prolift.
The most frequent complications included erosion through vaginal epithelium, infection, pain, urinary problems, and recurrence of prolapse and/or incontinence.
There were also reports of bowel, bladder, and blood vessel perforation during insertion.
In some cases, vaginal scarring and mesh erosion led to a significant decrease in patient quality of life due to discomfort and pain, including dyspareunia.
Treatment of the various types of complications included additional surgical procedures (some of them to remove the mesh), IV therapy, blood transfusions, and drainage of hematomas or abscesses.
