TYPES OF MESOTHELIOMA
Mesothelioma is caused by occupational asbestos exposure
There are three types of mesothelioma. The most common type is called “pleural mesothelioma” (which affects the lining of the lungs). Other types of mesothelioma are “peritoneal mesothelioma” (affecting the lining of the abdomen), and “pericardial mesothelioma” (which affects the lining of the heart).
TYPES OF MESOTHELIOMA
Pleural mesothelioma
Pleural mesothelioma represents about 75 percent of all mesothelioma cases. Malignant mesothelioma of the pleural cavity is caused by the inhalation of airborne asbestos fibers that become lodged in the lining of the lungs, called the pleura.
Peritoneal mesothelioma
Mesothelioma of the abdomen is called peritoneal mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma accounts for approximately 15 percent of all types of mesothelioma cases.
Pericardial mesothelioma
Pericardial mesothelioma is the rarest form of the disease, and it affects the linings of the heart cavity. Less than 10 percent of all types of mesothelioma cases are related to the heart.
These types of mesothelioma are primarily caused by occupational asbestos exposure. Retired workers from the construction, automotive and maritime industries make up the vast majority of mesothelioma cases today.
The number of mesothelioma diagnoses are expected to peak in the United States in 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Currently, 3,000 cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed every year in the United States.
Worldwide, some 90,000 individuals die from asbestos-related diseases every year according to The World Health Organization.
