Tysabri (natalizumab), marketed by Élan, is of a class of drugs known as monoclonal antibodies. The drug is designed for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS), and possibly other autoimmune syndromes such as Crohn's disease, by altering immune function. The mechanism of action of this drug is believed to involve the inhibition of immune cells from crossing blood vessel walls to reach various tissues, including the brain. While the drug was shown to be powerfully effective for preventing relapses of MS, 2 cases of a rare brain disease known as PML (progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy) were found in patients given Tysabri in February of 2005. An additional case was confirmed in March of 2005, and two possible cases have been reported in June 2005. The drug was voluntarily withdrawn from the market after the first 2 confirmed cases and debate continues over its possible return to the market.
