AOC Addresses Tunnel Communication Issues for US Capitol Police
The Government Office of Accountability (GAO) is a non-partisan agency that investigates and reports on how federal tax dollars. This page focuses on potential communication issues in situations where members of the U.S. Capitol Police may be working in underground tunnels in the U.S. Capitol buildings. The tunnels are known to be contaminated with asbestos, a dangerous carcinogen known to cause serious lung diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.

Communication
Working in confined spaces such as the tunnels requires the ability to communicate with workers outside the tunnels for coordination and emergency rescue in the event of illness or accident.
According to AOC officials, the current communication system, which uses two-way radios, has been expanded and is operational in the tunnels. However, routine operations and inspections have revealed "dead spots" in two tunnels, which AOC is working to address.
AOC plans to explore the installation of a new communication system for the tunnels that would allow for communication with the U.S. Capitol Police and rescue workers if necessary. The new system would also indicate a worker’s location automatically.
