Each year, approximately 200,000 women undergo pelvic or other gynecological surgery to repair organ prolapse problems. These women come from every stage in life, including women who had difficult pregnancies and deliveries, mothers who needed a C-section because of high birth weight or multiple birth pregnancies, and older women with post-menopausal gynecological problems.
The women undergoing these surgeries often require repairs with transvaginal mesh tape to strengthen pelvic organs that have prolapsed. Several brands of mesh, including Avaulta (manufactured by Bard) and Gynecare Prolift (marketed by Ethicon) have been used in these procedures.
Serious Injuries Caused by Transvaginal Mesh
Tragically, many women who have undergone these procedures have suffered from serious post-surgical complications caused by the surgical mesh.
Women have reported suffering from significant post-operative pain, and that the pain does not diminish or go away even after several months. For these women, their pain is complicated by the frustration they feel when their symptoms are not being thoroughly reviewed by their doctors.
In other cases, the mesh has eroded into the vagina, bladder, blood vessels or other organs and has caused serious infections to develop. In some cases, the erosion has left them unable to engage in intercourse without pain.
In many more cases, the mesh has caused prolapse problems to recur, leaving these women with urinary and bowel incontinence problems, sometimes more severe than their initial complaints.
