Controversy Continues Regarding Vermont Asbestos Group Mine Report
In November 2008, the Vermont Department of Health released a report regarding the abandoned Vermont Asbestos Group mine in Eden, VT. The mine has been closed since 1993. The report cited health data which stated Eden residents living near the mine site were greater risk to develop asbestos-related diseases such as asbestosis.
The report was prompted, in part, by a report from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation, which stated that asbestos waste at the site is beginning to erode.
At public meetings, residents of the area expressed concern about the report and have questioned DOH representatives about the accuracy of the health information used to compile the report. Residents are also concerned that the report and media attention regarding the mine has harmed their property values.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
