The District of Columbia: Useful Services for Veterans

Asbestos is a mineral. It is composed of silicon, oxygen, hydrogen and other metals. Fibers made of asbestos are tough, flexible and flame retardant. Asbestos also insulates very well and will not break down easily. Asbestos has been used in older plastics, paper products and floor tiles. In some cases, asbestos fibers are mixed with a substance that binds them together, producing asbestos containing material, otherwise known as ACM. Various industrial products are made of ACM, for example sealants, cement pipe and insulation.

Many people served in the armed forces and had contact with asbestos for a long time without knowing that this could one day bring about the life-threatening disease: lung cancer.
