Veterans Healthcare for Women Behind the Standard of Care for Men
According to a Veterans Affairs study, healthcare for women who served in the military falls short in terms of the healthcare offered to their male counterparts at many VA facilities.
Women make up approximately five percent of the VA's population, but that figure is expected to double over the course of the next two years. As of July 2008, women make up approximately 14 percent of the Americans serving in the military, and 11 percent of the 1.7 million troops deployed in the middle east are women.
The report indicates women are unable to obtain the same quality of outpatient care in approximately one-third of the VA's 139 facilities that offer those services. However, the report noted that studies reflect better surgical outcomes and decreased mortality for women at VA hospitals compared to women who receive care under Medicare or private insurers. The study also notes the VA breast and cervical cancer screening programs exceeds those programs offered by other private or government health plans.
