One of the side effects of Vioxx use is Angina. Angina pectoris is chest pain or a discomfort caused by decreased blood flow to the heart. Angina may feel like applied pressure or a squeezing pain in your chest. At times angina may be pains in your shoulders, back, arms, neck, or jaw or feel similar to indigestion. Angina pectoris is a preexisting condition for coronary heart disease and a possible sign for a future heart attack. In persons experiencing chest pains, they should seek professional medical care because not all chest pain or discomfort is angina.

Three variations of angina are stable, unstable, and variant.

Stable angina: this is the most common form of angina and occurs when the heart is overworking and these moments can be spurred by physical or emotional exertion. Stable angina occurs in a regular pattern where the individual suffering will recognize the moments when the pain will occur. Pain tends to cease in a few minutes when the person rests or takes their angina medicine.

Unstable angina: pain usually occurs without physical exertion and does not become alleviated with rest or medication. This form of angina comes unexpectedly and is more severe and prolonged compared to regular angina where treatment should be sought with emergency care as it can lead to sudden death. An artery may be partially blocked by a blood clot or narrowed by atherosclerosis.

Variant angina: also called Prinzmetal’s angina is similar to unstable angina except that coronary artery spasm is the cause for the pain. This is rarest form of angina and occurs usually at moments of rest. Pain is severe and most often occurs between the hours of midnight to early morning and can be relieved by medication. Approximately two thirds of people with variant angina have coronary atherosclerosis in at least one major vessel.
