WARNING SYMPTOMS OF ASBESTOS DISEASE
July 7, 2010 – Warning symptoms of asbestos-related mesothelioma do not appear for many years after the exposure, making it very difficult for doctors to detect the cancer in its crucial early stages. Mesothelioma's long latency period is why the cancer is often diagnosed at a late stage of development.
Workers who suspect they were exposed to asbestos on the job, even up to 50 years ago, and have not yet exhibited warning symptoms, should schedule periodic chest X-rays or pulmonary function tests to identify any early warning symptoms of asbestos exposure.
The sooner symptoms of asbestos exposure are recognized by a doctor, the greater the chances of a patient’s recovery.
Warning symptoms of asbestos mesothelioma
Of the three types of mesothelioma, pleural mesothelioma is the most common, comprising approximately two-thirds of all mesothelioma cases.
Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma cancer include:
- Persistent dry or raspy cough
- Coughing up blood
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Night sweats or fever
- Unexplained weight loss of 10 percent, or more
- Fatigue
- Persistent pain in the chest or rib area
- Painful breathing
- Shortness of breath even when at rest
- Appearance of lumps under the skin on the chest
If you exhibit any of these symptoms it does not necessarily indicate the presence of mesothelioma. But a physical exam is still advised.
Workers in the construction, automobile and maritime industries are most vulnerable to occupational asbestos exposure, which occurs most commonly through the accidental inhalation of airborne asbestos fibers.
