Grand Island, Nebraska: Right to Clean Water
In a legal filing, Cargill, Incorporated admitted that it used the same type of industrial solvents at its former seed treating facility in southwest Grand Island that were later found in the drinking water supply wells in the nearby Castle Estates, Kentish Hills, and Mary Lane subdivisions.
Cargill, based in Minnetonka, Minnesota, owned the seed treating facility from 1981 to 2000.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in consultation with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services System, has evaluated the risk to individuals who are drinking contaminated water from the area affected by the contamination.
EPA has determined that there are certain levels of contamination in the ground water that may pose an unacceptable health risk to these individuals.
Nearly 200 current or former residents of Grand Island, Nebraska are participating in a suit, which alleges that Cargill, the global food giant, is responsible for a dangerous plume of solvents that is threatening the health and property of area residents. They have opted to fight for their rights to a safe environment.
