In the months following the April 2010 BP oil spill disaster, thousands of men and women have been involved in the containment, cleanup and remediation of the crude oil spill.
Many of these individuals were commercial fishermen or boat owners, owners and employees facing significant tourism-related business losses or damage to their boats and property caused by the BP oil spill disaster.
Whether these workers were laying boom, collecting boom, cleaning tar balls, decontaminating beaches or assisting in other capacities, these workers also faced exposure to chemical pollutants in the crude oil and dispersants used to contain the spill.
Chemical Makeup of Crude Oil, Weathered Crude and Dispersed Crude
Since 1960, approximately 400 oil spills have occurred throughout the world. Tragically, investigations into oil spill chemical contamination and the potential health risks for those exposed to the chemical toxins in spilled crude have only been conducted after seven spills.
Crude oil is known to contain thousands of chemical compounds, including benzene, hydrocarbons, lead, zinc and other potentially dangerous volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
After an oil spill, the oil’s chemical makeup changes—resulting in what is known as “weathered crude.” In addition, the cleanup and remediation efforts conducted after the BP oil spill disaster involved the use of controlled burns and the use of chemical dispersants such as Corexit, causing even more potential for exposure for toxic chemicals.

Potential Health Risks for Those Exposed
According to information compiled by environmental health experts, the chemicals in crude oil and the chemical crude oil dispersants used to contain the oil spill have been linked to health problems affecting virtually every system in the body, including:
» The respiratory system;
» The brain and central nervous system;
» The liver and kidneys;
» The gastrointestinal system;
» The circulatory system, which can affect the formation of both red and white blood cells; and
» Body metabolism, which can affect the reproductive, endocrine and immune systems.
