Candles Burn Today In Honor of Workers’ Memorial Day
April 28, 2011 - Laura Ortiz (staff writer)
April 28this Workers’ Memorial Day commemorating those who have been killed by illnesses or incidences caused by their work. The event is an internationally recognized day of remembrance for over 40 countries.
The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization will join many in lighting a candle to honor the hundreds of thousands of people killed by asbestos exposure during their work.
In addition to pledging homage to these individuals, this day acts as a day of awareness to the asbestos problem that continues to this day. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 107,000 workers die every year from asbestos-related diseases.
The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization states that more than 300 people in the world die every day because of asbestos exposure that could have been prevented.
Asbestos corporations had knowledge about the dangers of asbestos long before the public. Their negligence is the reason that so many people continue to die from asbestos-related diseases. Nowadays, workers in the United States and Canada that have been diagnosed with an illness related to asbestos like mesothelioma can pursue financial compensation from these corporations.
