Zicam products are linked to anosmia says the FDA
Since the introduction of Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel to the market in 1999, the FDA has received more than 130 reports of anosmia (loss of sense of smell) associated with the use of Zicam zinc-containing intranasal products. They have since advised against using the following products:
- Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gell
- Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs
- Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size
“We are concerned that consumers may unknowingly use a [Zicam] product that could cause serious harm, and therefore we are advising them not to use these products for any reason,” says the director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
Weitz & Luxenberg can assist those injured by Zicam products by getting them compensation through a lawsuit. There is no need to wait, contact Weitz & Luxenberg today for a free legal consultation.
Problems caused by anosmia
We depend on our sense of smell to keep us safe by alerting us to gas leaks, distant fires, spoiled food, and contaminated water. Living with anosmia can often be very dangerous.
Having a sense of smell is often vital to a career, as well. The U.S. armed forces lists anosmia as a "disqualifying medical condition," (Post Gazette).
Our sense of smell also allows us to enjoy countless pleasures in life. Our tongue can only taste five different flavors – the rest comes from our sense of smell (WebMD).

Virginia resident, Dan Summerville developed anosmia at the age of three. Now, as an adult, he has to live differently than most people. He relies on his wife as a kind of safety inspector. When he turns off the furnace, he asks her to make sure that things are venting properly. His wife needs to tell him when food has spoiled or when the garbage needs to be taken out. When driving alone, Dan will crack his window even in the dead of winter – this is to make sure he is not inhaling exhaust fumes.

Unfortunately, some people who develop anosmia from Zicam products never regain their sense of smell. There is no known cure.
An example of Zicam-related anosmia
“Olfactory loss entails particularly serious risks for firemen," said Dr. Hirschof the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago. “They need the ability to smell natural gas in order to prevent explosions. They need the ability to detect the rotten-egg odor of hydrogen sulphide so they can flee before losing consciousness…and they need the ability to detect olfactory indications of an underlying fire. Hence, olfactory loss jeopardizes these individuals and their performance on the job," (The Independent).

John has been supporting his family for the last ten years as a New York City Firefighter. One day, he catches a cold and his nasal passages become clogged. In order to work, John needs to have his sense of smell, so, he buys a Zicam nasal product. Ironically, the Zicam product leaves John without his sense of smell permanently – as this has been known to happen with Zicam-related anosmia. Without any other skills, John must quit being a firefighter and go on disability. The money John gets from the government can barely cover the cost of his bills, let alone put food on the table for his family.
Weitz & Luxenberg can help John by seeking compensation for expenses such as:
- Income loss during periods of treatment or hospitalization
- Future earnings lost because of the condition
- All therapy and counseling fees related to coping with anosmia
- Any debt John has accrued while dealing with his condition, such as past due car payments, defaulted loans, or credit card bills
- Any out of pocket expenses related to the incident
- Pain and suffering
