On June 18, 2009, the Houston Chronicle reported on a Richmond, TX man who slowly realized he had been losing his sense of smell.
Friends noticed the 45-year old had ceased complaining about the smell of second-hand tobacco smoke.
Then, they had to tell him about a noxious odor coming from his gutter that turned out to be a dead animal.
That was the last straw: he knew something was seriously wrong.
He then learned that his use of Zicam products had caused him to develop amnosia, the clinical term for the loss of sense of smell.
In June 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about Zicam cold nasal gel, swabs and other products, after receiving reports of other Zicam users who suffered from diminished senses of smell.
Some users developed amnosia after a single dose of the product. The FDA reported that while some Zicam users have recovered their sense of smell, for other amnosia patients, the condition is permanent.
In the Chronicle story, the man they profiled works for a well water treatment company where chlorine products are used. If his ability to smell does not return, he is at significant risk for serious injury, as he would not be able to tell if he was accidentally exposed to unsafe levels of the chemical.
For other Zicam users either temporarily or permanently disabled by the product, they are faced with the potential risk of serious injury from dangerous flammable chemicals that may only be noticeable by odor, such as gasoline, charcoal lighter fluid or turpentine.
In the home, an amnosia patient would be unable to smell a gas leak, an overheated pot on the stove or in the oven, or even smoke from a blocked vent in a lit fireplace. At home and work, amnosia patients would be unable to smell smoke, burning wires or other toxic odors that are prevalent in structure fires.
If you or a loved one used Zicam products and has been diagnosed with amnosia, our lawyers may be able to help you seek compensation from the company responsible for your injury.
