The Zimmer Durom hip cup that was subject to a recall on July 22, 2008, is an artificial hip component manufactured by Zimmer Holdings, ltd.

The Zimmer cup was first sold worldwide in 2006. Since then, it has been implanted into an estimated 12,000 patients as part of hip replacement surgery.

Leading up to that recall, the Zimmer Durom hip cup sparked concern from some physicians and surgeons because patients began reporting a perceived high rate of failure for the device.

This prompted Zimmer to suspend sales and recall the Zimmer cup amid concerns that the device might be defective and susceptible to failure once implanted.

Warning signs
Dr. Lawrence Dorr, a prominent surgeon warned colleagues in April 2008 that patients implanted with the Zimmer Durom cut, an artificial hip component, may come loose, causing pain and the possible need for replacement surgery.

Dr. Dorr, an orthopedist in Los Angeles, told the New York Times about his concerns regarding the that the Zimmer Durom® Cup.

After that article was printed, a growing number of Dr. Dorr's colleagues came forward to report that they believe the Durom cup component has a higher than expected rate of failure.

As a result of this public concern, Zimmer halted sales of the Durom® Cup.
