Zimmer Recall of Durom Hip Replacements From Defective Medical Device Lawyers
Why did Zimmer recall its Zimmer Durom hip replacement components?
In April 2008, Dr. Lawrence Dorr, an orthopedic surgeon in Los Angeles, was featured in an article in the New York Times about hip replacements, including certain Zimmer Durom devices.
In that news report, Dr. Dorr recalled that something was very wrong with some of his hip replacement patients who received the Durom component.
The article stated that, months after routine Zimmer Durom hip replacements surgeries, some patients were in agony.
Dr. Dorr told the Times he had implanted the same Zimmer Durom metal hip socket in each patient. Several needed surgery again — a replacement for their replacement.
Reportedly, Dr. Dorr "sounded an alarm to colleagues in a professional association and soon heard back from doctors with similar experiences."
In Zimmer's response to the article, it said: "Our comprehensive investigation identified that surgeons who regularly achieve the desired outcome with the Durom Cup consistently execute certain technique steps in a specific manner. Following the investigation, Zimmer has determined that revised surgical technique instructions and a surgical training program are required to more consistently achieve desired clinical results in the U.S."
