Zimmer Durom Hip Implant Potential Problems

The Food and Drug Administration has a database of "adverse events" for medical devices. That database has accounts of patients whose loose Zimmer Durom Cup led to the physical pain and hardship of additional surgeries.
In a recent account, a patient had a Zimmer Durom Cup implanted in 2007.
The Zimmer Durom Cup became loose, reportedly, and the patient had explantation of the loose durom cup in early 2009 with re-implantation of a new Zimmer Durom Cup.
The dates of use reported by the FDA were implanted on original date; removed in early 2009. Diagnosis or reason for use: left hip osteoarthritis.
Sadly, this is but one instance of many patient accounts where the Zimmer Durom has become loose within two years of the initial implant surgery.

Warning signs
Dr. Lawrence Dorr, a prominent surgeon warned colleagues in April 2008 that patients implanted with the Zimmer Durom Cup, an artificial hip component, may come loose, causing pain and the possible need for replacement surgery.

Dr. Dorr, an orthopedist in Los Angeles, told the New York Times about his concerns regarding the that the Zimmer Durom® Cup.
After that article was printed, and Dr. Dorr informed colleagues of his concerns in a letter, a growing number of health professionals came forward to report that they believe the Durom cup component has a higher than expected rate of failure.
As a result of this public concern, Zimmer halted sales of the Durom® Cup.
