Zimmer Recall Sparks Possible Durom Hip Cup Replacement Lawsuits

Why did Zimmer recall its Durom hip cup?
On July 22, 2008, Zimmer temporarily suspended marketing and distribution of Durom® Acetabular Component in the United States.

Zimmer Holdings, Inc said the recall was being conducted so the company could update labeling to provide more detailed surgical technique instructions to surgeons and implements its surgical training program in the U.S.

It said the recall of the Durom Cup would not affect sales outside America--that it would continue to be marketed without interruption outside the U.S.

Zimmer said it was taking this voluntary recall action to address its concerns regarding reports of cup loosenings and revisions of the acetabular component used in total hip replacement procedures, in some patients who have been implanted with the Durom Cup in the U.S.

This recall came on the heels of a flood of reports from surgeons here that said they experienced elevated revision rates since the Zimmer Durom product was launched in the U.S. in 2006.

Our defective drug and medical device lawyers are now investigating Zimmer Durom Cup lawsuits for people who have been experiencing serious problems with the recalled Zimmer Durom Cup hip implants.

Many individuals who have experienced problems after a hip replacement may be unaware of the specific type of hip implant used.

Specifically, our Zimmer hip implant lawyers are reviewing cases for potential lawsuits for patients who have experienced problems following a hip replacement since 2006 when the Zimmer first introduced the Durom Cup that was the subject of the recall.

Since then, the Zimmer Durom cup has been implanted in more than 12,000 patients in the United States.
