The mesothelioma lawyers of nationally known asbestos-exposure law firm Weitz & Luxenberg, P.C., said they hope on Saturday to alert as many individuals as possible to the scourge of mesothelioma.

Saturday, September 26, is National Mesothelioma Awareness Day. The law firm said its mesothelioma attorneys intend to do their part to educate people about the hyper-aggressive cancer.

W&L is lending its full support to National Mesothelioma Awareness Day because it recognizes “the importance of focusing the nation’s attention on the tragedy of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.”

The reason this focus is important is because mesothelioma devastates individuals and whole families.

The disease strikes not just at human health — mesothelioma can be fatal in a matter of a few months after diagnosis if untreated. It also strikes at household finances.

Empowerment Through Mesothelioma Awareness

National Mesothelioma Awareness Day is also important because it helps empower people against mesothelioma.

“W&L has long stood at the forefront of the fight to help those who have been hurt by mesothelioma to hit back hard — not just against mesothelioma, but against the corporations responsible for it,” the firm stated.

The firm explained that a number of corporations once made asbestos-containing products and then sold them to unsuspecting consumers.

“People who bought these products or who worked with them for a living were given no warning about the extreme health dangers of being exposed to asbestos,” W&L said.

Yet, the firm contended, those corporations knew their products were toxic but continued to make and sell them regardless.

“This is the type of information we believe the public needs to be told about on Mesothelioma Awareness Day,” W&L said.

Knowing the Mesothelioma Treatment Options

W&L attorneys also hope to raise consciousness on Mesothelioma Awareness Day about mesothelioma treatment options.

Mesothelioma patients should be particularly encouraged by the remarkable treatment breakthroughs in such fields as molecular targeted therapy.

Molecular targeted therapy entails engineering a mesothelioma drug to kill mesothelioma cells by exploiting some weakness in the cancer’s DNA or metabolic functions.

“People with mesothelioma are living much longer and better thanks to these advanced treatments,” W&L said, offering the example of one mesothelioma patient who has fought the disease for 18 years and is still going strong.

“However, the problem is that these and all other mesothelioma treatments are very costly. Most mesothelioma patients can’t afford them without exercising a legal right to compensation,” W&L said.

Mesothelioma Registry Being Talked About

W&L said its mesothelioma attorneys will also do what they can to help generate news about a bill currently before Congress to establish a national mesothelioma registry.

If the registry bill becomes law, it would help mesothelioma patients more conveniently learn what forms of mesothelioma therapy are available from each mesothelioma care center, the firm said.

W&L said it believes such a registry will help mesothelioma patients make the best possible choices for themselves.

“As we have been every year since the first Mesothelioma Awareness Day, we are proud to join with countless others on Saturday who will draw the nation’s attention to a vicious cancer that must be cured,” W&L said.
