W&L Honors Newest Class of LeGaL Board OfficersMar. 15, 2017
Weitz & Luxenberg recently joined with LeGaL, the LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York, to celebrate the election of the Association and Foundation’s newly-elected board officers.
Among the incoming officers is W&L Appellate Unit associate attorney Gennaro Savastano, who was elected president of the board. He previously served as the vice chair of LeGaL’s Judiciary Committee.
“LeGaL has a proud history and role in the New York legal and LGBT communities, and I am honored and humbled to take on this role,” Mr. Savastano said. “Through our charitable arm, the LeGaL Foundation, we provide much needed legal services to the LGBT community at large, including free walk-in clinics. I am so grateful to Weitz & Luxenberg for fostering a welcoming culture and being receptive to supporting this important work.”
Mr. Savastano was sworn in by the Hon. Paul G. Feinman of the New York Supreme Court Appellate Division, First Department, who is a former president of LeGaL. The Association and Foundation board officers were sworn in by the Hon. George J. Silver of the New York County Civil Branch of the New York Supreme Court. The induction ceremony was followed by a drinks and hors d’oeuvres reception at the Weitz & Luxenberg offices.
A Historical and Vital Part of the Community
The reception was the first formal induction ceremony for LeGaL, which was founded in 1978 as a social organization, and became one of the nation’s first LGBT bar associations in 1984.
Its diverse efforts include the LeGaL Foundation, which is a 501(c)(3) that offers a pro bono legal clinic and the area’s only career fair dedicated to first-year LGBT law students.
Weitz & Luxenberg has also been a proud sponsor of LeGaL’s Annual Judicial Reception and its dedicated work in the community.
