Birth Injury

Birth Injury Can Cause Permanent Damage

Occasionally, during delivery itself, a baby suffers a physical injury. This event is called birth trauma or birth injury.

Any injuries are upsetting, especially when they occur during the birth process. Common traumas that occur at birth include:

  • Caput succedaneum, a severe swelling of the soft tissues of a baby’s scalp.
  • Cephalohematoma, an area of bleeding between the bone and its fibrous covering.
  • Subconjunctival hemorrhage, the breakage of small blood vessels in the baby’s eyes.
  • Facial paralysis.
  • Brachial palsy, a condition that occurs when the brachial plexus (the group of nerves that supplies the arms and hands) is injured.

Because birth injury, or trauma, generally results from mechanical forces, such as compression or traction, the role of the physician is critically important. If your baby has suffered complications due to medical malpractice or negligence, you may be entitled to compensation.
