Evaluations Process

Eligible firms must have a minimum of at least one lawyer recognized by the Best Lawyers in America. Firms undergo an analysis involving feedback provided by clients and professional references. ⁽¹⁾

Firmographic information is gathered from the law firm itself. Lawyer evaluations are collected, and industry leaders are interviewed. ⁽²⁾

Tier Rankings

Awards are made according to a tier ranking system, accounting for variances in such things as geographic region, size, and practice areas. Quantitative and qualitative data are then combined to obtain a firm’s score. ⁽³⁾

The number of tier awards can vary due to lack of enough data to create a competitive analysis. For example, when specialties in a jurisdictional area are not practiced or there are too few firms practicing to create a fair analysis. ⁽⁴⁾

Tier categories included regional, national, and elite levels. This year there were 17,555 firms who received regional recognition in 127 practice areas. There were 2,340 firms that earned national rankings in 75 practice areas. ⁽⁵⁾
