Obstetric brachial plexus palsy is a type of preventable birth injury. This injury most commonly occurs during a difficult birth.
The term “palsy” means paralysis of muscles, or not being able to move muscles in a given area. The brachial plexus is a set of nerves that control the muscles of the arm.
This type of injury may occur when there is difficulty delivering the baby’s shoulder. The shoulder may become lodged against the mother’s pubic bone causing the brachial plexus nerves to stretch or tear. In the process, nerves may be damaged.
Because doctors play a critical role in both the delivery and after-interventions, when necessary, their expertise is vital. If you believe your doctor was negligent and harmed your baby, you may be able to seek damages.
