In November of 2010, DePuy Orthopaedics Inc. distributed a press release officially recalling two defective hip implant systems. These systems, the ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR hip Resurfacing System. Sylvia Docherty, a 63-year-old mother, was diagnosed with arthritis in 2005, and her doctor prescribed a DePuy ASR hip implant. Sylvia did not receive the relief from hip pain that she wanted, and instead has been confined to crutches.
“I'm in constant pain, [the DePuy hip implant] has ruined my life,” says Sylvia Docherty. Because of the severe pain and extensive medical attention she has experienced, Sylvia was forced to retire early from her job.
“'The implant destroyed a lot of the soft tissue around my hip and very high levels of chromium and cobalt have been found in my blood,” says Docherty. “I used to be very active; walking the dog and shopping with friends. But I can't do that now.” She had revision surgery, but the doctors were unable to completely fix the damage caused by the implant. Sylvia is still on crutches (DailyMail).

In 2003, DePuy released the ASR™ XL Acetabular Hip System and DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System. These systems were designed to either replace part of a person's hip, or all of it.
