Attorneys from Weitz & Luxenberg filed a class action lawsuit against xAI and its affiliates on behalf of residents impacted by noise, vibration, and pollution associated with xAI’s Southaven operations. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of residents being harmed by the persistent noise and vibration stemming from xAI’s data center power plant in Southaven, Mississippi.
How the xAI Facility Is Affecting Southaven Residents
xAI owns several massive data centers in the area that are used to run its chatbot, Grok. The company’s xAI Southaven, MS facility and associated turbine operations have become the focus of growing community concern. To power these data centers, xAI relies on loud, gas-powered turbines that run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at its Southaven facility. This facility is next to several residential communities. Since August 2025, xAI has been expanding its operations, ramping up the number of turbines from 3 to 18 to 57. The impact on the surrounding community is substantial.
Since August, residents living within several miles of xAI’s Southaven plant have been forced to endure inescapable noise, vibration, and air pollution. This makes it difficult to sleep, spend time outside, or relax inside their homes. But despite months of community opposition and noise complaints, xAI has made no meaningful effort to halt the harm.
Community members now seek accountability in court. W&L’s lawsuit asks for monetary damages to compensate for the months of disruption, emotional distress, and physical health harm; compensation for lost property value; and an injunction ordering the company to mitigate the noise.
If you have experienced noise, vibration, sleep disruption, property impacts, or other harms from the xAI Southaven, MS facility or nearby power plant operations, you may have legal options.

Data centers run 24/7. This constant operation is critical to each company’s bottom line. Companies can only make a profit when the computers are running, which requires lots of electrical power.
Data centers often rely on gas-fired turbines to secure a stable and uninterrupted power supply — usually as emergency backup power, only used during electrical grid outages or for limited testing. But at the xAI power plant facility in Southaven, xAI runs dozens of gas-powered turbines 24/7 to power their nearby data centers.
These turbines emit a loud, intrusive, and constant noise. It is often described as a combination of continuous engine roaring, low-frequency rumbling, and tonal humming or whining. The noise’s unique tonal components make it harder for the human brain to ignore. It also includes a low-frequency sound range, not perceptible to the human ear. This manifests like physical vibrations and can be felt in the body.
Low frequency noise is often woven into horror movie soundtracks to instill fear, tension, and anxiety in the audience. But for residents of Southaven, this nightmarish noise is present daily. In addition to seriously degrading residents’ quality of life, chronic noise — especially at night — is a known health risk.
Why Noise From the xAI Southaven Facility Never Stops
The xAI facility supporting Grok and other artificial intelligence systems requires substantial energy resources. According to the lawsuit, power generation activities associated with the facility have contributed to ongoing noise and vibration concerns for nearby residents.
“These turbines run at all hours of the day and night. They run on the weekends and over holidays. For neighboring residents, there’s no relief from the onslaught of noise,” says Ms. Emma Dietz, an attorney in W&L’s Environmental, Toxic Tort & Consumer Protection litigation unit.
“Community members can no longer enjoy their evenings relaxing outside. The sounds of a southern summer are drowned out by the constant industrial roar. Kids don’t want to play outside anymore. But going indoors doesn’t help, because the noise and vibrations penetrate windows and walls. There’s no way to escape — the noise is there when you’re trying to work, when you’re trying to relax, and when you’re trying to sleep,” she adds.
“In addition to the financial compensation we are seeking in our lawsuit, we are asking that our clients get relief from the constant noise and ongoing degradation of their community. We are asking for the facility to take measures to contain the noise or preventing xAI from engaging in these harmful operating practices.”
How the xAI Southaven Facility Is Affecting Local Residents
Residents of Southaven and the nearby town of Horn Lake moved to the area because of its family-oriented atmosphere, abundance of outdoor reactional opportunities, and peaceful suburban nature. Community members were once able to frequent outdoor spaces like public parks and nature trails, play sports outside, and generally enjoy the serenity of their neighborhoods.
But that changed when xAI secretively bought a defunct power plant in Southaven and installed dozens of gas-powered turbines, creating the xAI Southaven, MS facility. These turbines power xAI’s massive AI data centers across the border in Tennessee. Since August 2025, these gas-powered turbines have been running constantly. What’s more, xAI has continued increasing the number of turbines on site.
After xAI began operating its Southaven plant, life changed for nearby residents. They now live with non-stop intolerable noise and vibrations. Community members have spent months demanding accountability and action to reduce the noise, but their cries have fallen on deaf ears. According to our lawsuit, the “presence of this noise is pervasive and inescapable, especially at night when background noise subsides.”
“xAI’s de facto power plant for its AI data centers is hurting the community’s quality of life and causing residents to suffer substantial irritation, emotional distress, and harm to their physical health. It interferes with people’s ability to enjoy their outdoor spaces, and to relax inside their own homes. It’s diminishing property values and increasing pollution,” Ms. Dietz emphasizes.
What Are xAI’s Artificial Intelligence Data Centers?
Data centers are large industrial facilities that house computer servers and networking equipment used to store, process, and transmit digital data. Over the past decade, the data center industry has expanded at a frantic pace, driven in large part by the explosive adoption of AI technologies that require enormous computing capacity.
AI models — especially large language models and other generative systems like xAI’s Grok — require continuous, highly intensive computing power to function. This requires vast amounts of energy. Large AI data centers can consume hundreds of megawatts of electricity, comparable to the energy demand of small cities.
Data centers often rely on gas-fired turbines or engines to secure a stable and uninterrupted power supply. These systems are often installed as emergency backup generators, only intended to provide power during electrical grid outages or for limited testing. But xAI runs gas-powered turbines 24/7 to power its massive AI data centers.
Gas-powered turbines are notoriously noisy. xAI should have anticipated how much noise the Southaven plant would generate. The company should have known the effect this noise would have on residents living nearby.
Instead of taking steps to proactively mitigate this harm, xAI moved into Southaven in secret, and has continually denied the problem. Despite ongoing opposition from concerned community members, xAI has continued to expand its gas-powered turbine plant, making even more noise.
How Constant Noise Can Affect Health & Quality of Life
It is well established that exposure to constant noise harms human health and wellness. Persistent exposure to elevated noise can cause anxiety, fatigue, depression, stress, reduced sleep quality, and other medical complications like tinnitus and headaches. It can also cause irritability, annoyance, and emotional distress. The damage is physical, emotional, and psychological.
Facilities like the xAI Southaven, MS facility also produce low-frequency sounds and vibrations that can travel significant distances. Residents can feel the vibrations — like the feeling of resonant bass at a concert, but constant. It rattles the windows and can damage property.
Gas-powered turbines also generate significant levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM2.5), carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other air pollutants. These contaminants can cause respiratory harms like worsened asthma, as well as cardiovascular injury — and even premature death.
How Noise Pollution Can Affect Property Values & Household Costs
Residents living near the xAI power plant Southaven operation may also experience economic harm. Excessive noise and the stigma of living near a polluting facility can reduce property values, causing homeowners to lose equity in their homes. Realtors apply nuisance discounts to such properties. Homebuyers often avoid buying property in places plagued by such pollution.
A data center’s massive energy demand can also spike utility bills. And when people can no longer open their windows to cool their homes due to the noise, they must run their air conditioning more often. This can result in increased out-of-pocket expenses for residents.
Living with chronic noise may also lead to unexpected out-of-pocket expenses for healthcare costs, incurred by treating conditions from headaches to emotional distress.
How Industrial Noise Can Affect Wildlife & Local Ecosystems
Continuous noise from AI data centers and their power plants also harms wildlife. Hunting, feeding, and breeding patterns can be disrupted. Biodiversity is reduced, and native animals may be displaced. This hurts the environment, reduces the aesthetic value of the community, and eliminates valuable outdoor activities like birding.
People’s pets are also harmed by the noise. Pets may display signs of stress, anxiety, or other behavioral changes. Some residents have reported that their dogs no longer want to spend time relaxing outside, have changed their eating patterns, or that they hide from the noise.
