Weitz & Luxenberg Provides information on the recall of Actos by the FDA
Is it true that the FDA has recalled Actos?
Not entirely. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning to medical professionals and Actos patients that the drug could cause bladder cancer (especially if used in high doses and over an extended period of time) it has not yet been recalled and can be found across drugstores in the United States.
Across the Atlantic, Actos was banned in Germany and in France after “an official study conducted by the French public health insurance office highlighted a potential risk of bladder cancer from Actos.” (Reuters)Exactly how Actos can cause bladder cancer has yet to be determined, but the drug’s manufacturer, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, is fully cooperating with all investigations and has even agreed to sponsor a study. (Other, non-lethal, side effects of Actos also exist.)
According to the FDA, there is less of a risk associated with taking Actos than its competitor, Avandia, which faced almost complete recall for its dangerous side effects. Although there is not concrete evidence irrefutably linking Actos to bladder cancer, the mere suggestion of a link is unsettling to many.
