ECZEMA DRUGS: Elidel (pimecrolimus) cream, and Protopic (tacrolimus) ointment, linked to 78 cancer cases
Elidel and Protopic are creams that are prescribed to treat the symptoms of eczema by suppressing the immune system. They have been linked to extremely dangerous side effects, including skin cancer and lymphoma.
There have been 78 cases of cancers, including skin and lymphoma, reported to the Food & Drug Administration in patients treated with the eczema drugs Elidel and Protopic.
In January of 2006, the FDA updated the labeling on Elidel and Protopic to include a black box warning regarding the cancer risk of using these drugs. A black box warning is the FDA's most serious type of warning in prescription drug labeling.
