On July 22, 2008, Zimmer Inc., manufacturer of the Zimmer Durom cup, Metasul Durom acetabular hip replacement component, suspended the product. Our defective drugs and medical devices lawyers are currently speaking with people who have experienced failure of the device, injury, and/or required additional surgery to correct a failed component.

The Zimmer Durom acetabular component is part of the the Metasul LDH Head System, and is intended for people with Noninflammatory degenerative joint disease.

According to the Food and Drug Administration's recall notice, the Zimmer Durom product was suspended because its "use/surgical technique instructions are inadequate."

A letter was sent to implanting surgeons on July 22, 2008 advising them of the problem and instructing them to stop implanting these devices until they receive training.

Zimmer suspended all marketing and distribution in the U.S. pending completion of user training and revision of the instructions for surgical technique.

According to the FDA, Zimmer then said it would conduct a removal of all copies of the current surgical technique document and replace it with revised surgical technique document(s).

Subsequently, A "dear surgeon" letter was mailed August 4, 2008, which provided patient management guidelines.

A correction update was sent 8/16/08 with updated surgical technique and instructions.

A "dear surgeon" letter was mailed 9/25/08 providing additional information regarding the training program.
