Once again, Weitz & Luxenberg is delighted to announce our standing as a top law firm when it comes to filing asbestos exposure claims. KCIC published its annual report for 2024, and Weitz & Luxenberg holds fast to its ranking among the top three firms. KCIC’s 2024 report includes claims filed through January 31, 2025. (1)
KCIC is a consulting firm dedicated to helping defendant companies manage their product liabilities. No national database for asbestos exposure filings exists. However, KCIC reviews and processes likely 90% or more of nationwide legal filings. (2) (3)
National Asbestos Exposure Disease Trends
By the end of January 2025, a total of 3,931 asbestos-related lawsuits were processed. However, KCIC expects law firms to file more lawsuits for 2024 as 2025 continues. (4)
In its report, KCIC places asbestos court cases into four major disease categories. Mesothelioma continues to be the disease that has the greatest impact on the total number of filings. (5)
Here are the numbers of lawsuits filed: (6)
- Mesothelioma: 1,907.
- Lung cancer: 1,644.
- Other cancers: 76.
- Non-malignant diagnoses: 228.
In addition, for another 76, the disease is not stated. (7)
Tragically, the number of firms bringing talc-related asbestos exposure cases is on the rise. In 2020, the number of cases related to talc was 428. In 2024, the number rose to 751. (8)
Asbestos Litigation and Gender
The number of men filing asbestos-related cases continues to be higher than that for women. This trend is not surprising given that historically larger numbers of men than women worked in industries where asbestos was prevalent. (9)
For 2024, men represented 83.9% of all filings. For mesothelioma, men constituted 75.1% of filings. For lung cancer, the percentage of men filing cases was higher at 91.9%. (10)

(917) LAWYERSAsbestos Litigation and Age
The reports also looks at age. Not every legal complaint filed indicated the plaintiff’s date of birth. In 2024, only 32% of plaintiffs included their age. (11)
The age reported is their age at the time of the plaintiff’s legal complaint. If the complaint names a deceased plaintiff, the person’s age at death is the age used. (12)
The age range for all plaintiffs over the past 10 years was 72-75 years. For 2024, the average age of all plaintiffs for all asbestos disease categories was 75 years. The plaintiffs ranged in age from 38 to 96 years. (13)
Of particular note, the youngest age of 38 was for a mesothelioma filing for 2024. (14)
Top Jurisdictions for 2024 Filings
The location where the lawsuits were filed is called the jurisdiction. This is the city or county and state.
The top jurisdictions for asbestos-related personal injury cases in 2024 are similar to those reported in 2023. The top five filing jurisdictions are: (15)
- Madison County, Illinois: 882.
- St. Clair, Illinois: 820.
- New York, New York: 317.
- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: 267.
- Cook County, Illinois: 176.
W&L Supporting Our Clients for Decades
In the 1980s, W&L established our firm specifically to help people who were exposed to asbestos. Back then, companies flagrantly disregarded warnings about the dangers of asbestos exposure. And, today, they’re still trying to get away with their misdeeds and reckless business practices.
As long as there are companies putting profit above people’s safety, Weitz & Luxenberg will be taking them on with every legal strategy possible. We are always here for our clients, fighting to make things right.
When you are diagnosed with mesothelioma or lung cancer, you become overwhelmed with the challenges before you. One of your first decisions is hiring the most capable law firm to represent you.
But this, too, can seem overwhelming. Ads on TV and online all boast of being the best.
To narrow your search, focus on the firm’s experience and track record. You want a firm that’s been around for a while — a firm with a solid history of handling asbestos exposure claims. Better yet, look for wins and successes.
We believe Weitz & Luxenberg is one such firm. We have achieved wins and settlements of roughly $19 billion on behalf of our clients. We invite you to call us at (917) LAWYERS to get acquainted and see why we are the right firm for you.
